According to a report from the National Council on Patient Information and Education, 40% of those with Type 2 diabetes who are poorly adherent to their medications are admitted to a nursing home. The report is referred to at the link: http://www.bemedicinesmart.org/A3_Report.pdf
I’m not necessarily totally in line with this report, since the commission that assembled this report is partly industry sponsored, and BigPharma will have you believe that medication adherence alone is the solution to successful aging and disease prevention, yet the true picture is painted much broader, yet with finer brush strokes. Since non-drug management is underutilized, and since overuse of medications, especially in older adults with diabetes, can be harmful, a closer look at the literature and using individualized approaches to disease management are in order. However, there are some data to suggest that successfully treating hypertension in older adults will reduce nursing home admissions, so the area warrants further longitudinal research.
